Cobb gets assistance on traffic projects near new stadium

Georgia's Department of Transportation will help pay for $42 million of the $101 million worth of transportation projects for Cobb County, which includes 17 projects designed to improve road improvements, way-finding signage and pedestrian trails.  The list of projects was submitted to GDOT in mid August and the state has already responded, in less than a month, which shows the urgency that has been placed on alleviating Cobb congestion.   Jay Roberts, Director of Planning for GDOT, stated in response to the request, "The projects selected reflect our continued commitment to alleviate congestion and improve mobility in the northwest corridor." So even though the state turned down half of the requested amount in terms of dollars, they have agreed to pay a huge portion of the cost of these projects, and those are dollars that Cobb's taxpayers will not have to foot the entire bill. Crossing Signal To Improve Safety in Marietta

The pedestrians who walk along the S. Marietta Parkway will soon have a traffic signal helping them safely cross the street near the Cobb Community Transit Transfer Station.  The City of Marietta is installing a signal which is called a High Density Activated Cross Walk Beacon, according to  the City Engineer.  The HAWK Beacon, as it's called will feature a flashing red light near the CCT  Station, which pedestrians can activate to stop traffic.  Marietta is also building a crosswalk on the road near the bus station.  The project will cost $100,000 and will be funded through 2011 special purpose local options sales tax and Federal Transit Administration funding. Distracted Driving Main Reason for Increase in Roadway Fatalities

Roadway deaths in Georgia have increased by nearly  33% in the first quarter of 2015. This is an alarming statistic for this figure to have jumped this high this quickly,  and transportation officials and experts are having a hard time figuring it out.   Distracted driving, which is one of many of today's flawed driving behavioral habits,  is definitely a major factor in this equation, along with speeding, impaired driving, and road rage.  This fact contributes to the many increases in single car fatalities and accidents in which the vehicle failed to maintain its lane.  The experts know and fear that more and more  people are driving while using their smart-phones, which of course now offer so many enticements including texting, emails, Facebook and Twitter, as well as the necessary apps that provide road and weather condition updates.
