Driving in the Center Lane

Cobb County accident report stated that on June 23, 2015 Driver 1 was attempting to make a left turn onto Roswell Road.  He advised that drivers in lanes 1 &2 of Roswell Rd stopped and motioned him forward.  When  Vehicle 1 proceeded through lanes 1 & 2 on Roswell Rd South, he failed to see Vehicle 2 traveling in the center lane.  That is when the front bumper of Vehicle 1 struck the front bumper of Vehicle 2.  Both vehicles received moderate damages and had to be removed.   Driver 2 was cited for Restriction of Center Lane.  Note:  You are more responsible in the center lane. 

Hit and Run

Clayton County accident report stated that on June 22, 2015 an officer was called to the scene of an accident  on I-75 SB.   Driver 2 advised that he was traveling SB on I-75 in the second lane when observed another vehicle speeding up behind him, when the other vehicle struck the right side of his Vehicle, and continued driving.  Driver 2 then stated that he then lost control of his vehicle and began to spin out.  As the spinning he began to brake to keep from spinning into the center of the roadway, and then impacted the guard rail.  After his vehicle came to a stop, he realized that the other car had sped away and he could not obtain any identifying information on Driver 1.  Driver 2 stated that he was having severe left shoulder pain and believed that his shoulder was dislocated from the collision and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for further medical treatment.  The officer could not identify any evidence that concurred with the info given by Driver 2. No citations were given.  Note:  In case of a rear ending, try to obtain license info. 

Parking Lot Too Tight

Fulton County accident report stated that on June 22, 2015 Driver 1  was traveling EB on Virginia Ave when she was hit while attempting to make a left turn into a shopping center.  Driver 2 stated that she was also traveling EB and that Vehicle 1 just suddenly came to a screeching stop, w/o a turn signal, and so could not avoid running into the rear end of Vehicle 2.  Although Driver 1 appeared to have been driving too closely, no citation was given due to the collision being made on private property.  

Note:  This one got away! 

Failure to Yield

Clayton County accident report states that on June 21, 2015 an officer was dispatched to the intersection of SR 138 and Kendrick Rd.   Driver 1 was driving W at the light at SR138 and Kendrick, waiting to turn left onto Kendrick Rd.  She started to turn left when she observed an oncoming vehicle turning  right and Driver 1 was hit on the driver’s side by Vehicle 2.  Driver 1 stated that the traffic light was yellow while she was in the intersection.  Driver 2 stated that Vehicle 1 turned right in front of her.  Driver 2 could not stop fast enough to avoid the accident and hit Driver 1Driver 2 was cited for broken turn signal  and for driving too fast for the conditions.   Driver 1 was cited for failure to yield

Driving with Suspended License & Failure to Yield

Fulton County / Sandy  accident report stated that on June 21, 2015 Driver 1 was attempting to exit a shopping center on Roswell Rd near Hammond Dr.  She said that she was about to make a left turn to go north, when she saw another vehicle pulling into the plaza as she pulled out.  She stated that she thought she had enough time to clear both the lanes and enter safely, but that when she entered the road she didn’t see Vehicle 2.  Both drivers complained of injuries and required medical attention.  Driver 1 was cited for failure to yield when entering the roadway. Driver 2 had no registration. NotePay attention while turning.

Left Hand Turns Require Yielding

Clayton County accident report stated that on June 20, 2015 Driver 2 was traveling SB on Fielder Rd and was not able to avoid striking Vehicle 1 which was driving on Logan Drive, while attempting  to make a left turn onto Fielder Rd.  Driver 1 stated that he was traveling SB on Fielder stated that he was halfway into the turn when he saw Vehicle 2. There were no injuries reported and only slight damage to the far rear left side of Vehicle 1, and slight damage to the far front left side of Vehicle 2.  Driver 1 was cited for failure to yield while turning left.  Note: When turning left, pay close attention. 

Give More Attention When Backing Up

Fulton County/Sandy Springs accident report stated that on  June 20, 2015  officers were dispatched to Mount Vernon Highway & Abernathy Rd to investigate a traffic accident.  Driver 1 stated that he had stopped  his SUV in the lane for the traffic signal and then decided to back his SUV so that he could move over into the adjacent lane, but backed into the front end of Vehicle 2 with the rear end of his SUV.  Vehicle 1 sustained moderate damage to the rear bumper of his vehicle and Vehicle 2 had slight damage to the rear end of his SUV.  No injuries were reported. Driver 2 complained of chest pains, but  declined EMS when they arrived.  Driver 1 was cited for improper backing.  Note:  When backing up you have to pay more attention to all sides, so back slowly & very cautiously. 

All Way Attention is Needed in Parking Lots

Cobb County/Smyrna accident report stated that on June 19, 2015  Vehicle 2 was backing into a parking space at the BOA on South Cobb Drive at the same time that Vehicle 1 pulled right into the parking space in front of Vehicle 2.  They collided with each other.  An eyewitness said that she saw both vehicles parking at exactly the same time and couldn’t tell who was at fault.  Both Driver 1 and Driver 2 claimed that they were each parking first and that the other was at fault.  There were no injuries reported and neither driver was cited, since the accident occurred on private property.  Note: Pay very close attention in the tight spaces of parking lots. 

DUI and Hit & Run

Cobb County/Marietta accident report stated that on June 17, 2015  Vehicle 1 was parked at the  Shell gas pump when a white BMW SUV backed into him.  Driver 1 told Driver 2 that she hit him.  And Driver 2 could only respond with, really?  She was drunk and he could even smell the alcohol on her breathe.  After telling her this, she got back in her car and then proceeded out of the parking lot, hitting another car in the process, and then left the scene before the police arrived.  An eyewitness wrote the license number down and the police were able to track down the BMW. When they got to her address, her vehicle did in fact have fresh damage right front bumper, the right door and the rear bumper, where she struck the two vehicles.  No injuries were reported. Driver 2 was arrested and cited for DUI, leaving the scene of the incident, improper backing.  Note: If you drink, don’t drive, and designate a sober driver.

DUI

Cobb County/Smyrna accident report stated that on June 15, 2015 Vehicle 2 traveled N on Cobb Parkway towards Windy Hill Road. Vehicle 1 was sitting in the exit of 2335 Cobb Pkwy to head South, and was struck by Vehicle 2.  The driver of the 1st vehicle admitted that he had been drinking before driving, which caused him to be very sleepy.  Driver 1 was arrested and cited for failure to yield entering the roadway, and for a DUI.   

Note: If you must drink, designate a driver. 

Turning Vehicle Must AlwaysYield

Cobb County/Smyrna accident report stated that on June 14, 2015 a Vehicle 2 was facing WB on Concord Road in the outside lane waiting straight into the side of the 2nd Vehicle, so the eyewitness stated.  Driver 1 said that she saw her light turn green.  Vehicle 1 was facing EB on the same street and when the light changed and Vehicle1 made her turn, but when asked if she saw a green arrow or light, she could not remember which.  Driver 2 stated that she got the green light 1st.  The driver’s side front end was damaged on Vehicle 2, as was the side door of Vehicle 2 . No one was injured.  Driver 1 was cited for failure to yield.  Note: The turning vehicle must always yield. 

Observe and Obey Traffic Signals and Signs

Cobb County/Smyrna accident report stated that on June 14, 2015 Driver 1 travelled SB on South Cobb Drive and attempted to make a left hand turn into the Subway Sandwich Shop parking lot when Vehicle 2, which was traveling NB on the same street, turned right into his lane and his car. Driver 2 stated that he did not see Vehicle 1 until it he was already into his turn, too late to avoid the collision.  The front of both vehicles were moderately damaged.  Neither party complained of any injuries. Both parties declined medical treatment. Vehicle 2 was cited for failure to obey the traffic control. Note: Traffic signals must be obeyed, or accidents will occur

It’s Not Always Safest to Park Closest to the Door

Clayton County/College Park accident report stated that on June 13, 2015 an officer was dispatched to 3449 Highway 138 regarding a hit and run collision.  Driver 2 stated that his vehicle was parked when several people at the   the Chic-Fil-A observed Vehicle 1 pull out of its parking space and back into Vehicle 2.  There was moderate damage sustained to Vehicle 2. No one got the license plate number, thinking that when he stopped to check for damage, and began writing a note, leaving it on the windshield of Vehicle 2, that he was leaving all of his pertinent information.  But he did not.  Note:  Respect the distance between your car and the others when parking in tight spaces/parking lots. 

Distractions inside and out

Clayton County/ Rex Ga accident report stated that on June 13, 2015 Driver 1 said he was making a left turn onto Rex Road when he dropped his cell phone and lost control of his vehicle and struck a No Turn Around Sign and knocked it down.  Vehicle 1 sustained slight damage, and Driver 1 was not injured.  The Transportation & Development Department was notified about the sign.  Driver 1 was given a warning citation, as it could not be proved he was texting while driving.  Note: Cell phones distract even while talking.  Definitely don’t text while driving. 

 

Defensive Driving Means Observing the Actual Road Itself

Clayton County/ Rex Ga accident report stated that on  June 12, 2015 Driver 1 was traveling South on I-675 at SR 42 when her front left tire ran over a large pothole.  She lost control for a minute or two and swerved back and forth over the yellow left line, which caused the lost of control of the vehicle, which caused the car to strike a steel pole on the shoulder. The officer called to the scene observed extensive damage to the vehicle’s front end. He also observed the very large pothole on the pavement near the yellow line right in front of the pole that was struck by the vehicle.  No citation was issued even though city property was damaged, due to the cause of the accident, the city’s pothole.  Note:  Observing defensive driving rules of the road means observe everything, cars, speed, distance and the road.
